There is honestly not a day that goes by that no matter what "training facility"(and I use those words loosely...95+% of "gyms" are nothing more than social clubs that people meet at to bitch about their problems to each other while in the presence of exercise equipment) I'm at that I happen to see something that makes me shake my head in disbelief. This weeks offender - static stretching.
For the record, static stretching is dead....dead like wearing zubaz workout pants with a nipple tank dead....dead like stuffing yourself into a skin tight "compression" shirt...well, that last one's not dead yet unfortunately but you get the point.
Does everyone need to create change and length in their muscles? Yes. If you are lifting heavy loads, will lazily slapping your leg up on a bar to "stretch" your hamstring actually do anything beneficial? No. Think about it... If you lift heavy and your muscles respond by creating changes in length and tension to move the weight - say a 200 lb clean - the 5-10 lbs of pressure you can put on your hamstring statically stretching it will do nothing....its used to responding to 200 lbs of force!
As always when it comes to training, the Revolution's goal is to get better. We get better by asking "Yes" and "No" questions. Will static stretching increase performance..."NO." Do people who advocate this in their training programs know what they are talking about..."NO." Should you listen to them...."NO"......unless its 1984.
